The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah

Often Gods work is being mocked at by the present day skeptical. The biblical events and incidences are being questioned and proved wrong. Yet it is true that the events mentioned in the Bible do have historicity and they are not mere mythological, imaginative stories.

The ruins of Sodom and Gomorrah have been discovered southeast of the Dead Sea. The modern names are Bab edh-Dhra, thought to be Sodom, and Numeira, thought to be Gomorrah. Both places were destroyed at the same time by an enormous conflagration. The destruction debris was about three feet thick. What brought about this awful calamity? Startling discoveries in the cemetery at Bab edh-Dhra revealed the cause. Archaeologists found that buildings used to bury the dead were burned by a fire that started on the roof. What would cause every structure in the cemetery to be destroyed in this way? The answer to the mystery is found in the Bible. Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrahfrom the Lord out of the heavens (Genesis 19:24). The only conceivable explanation for this unique discovery in the annals of archaeology is that burning debris fell on the buildings from the air. But how could such a thing happen?

There is ample evidence of subterranean deposits of a petroleum-based substance called bitumen, similar to asphalt, in the region south of the Dead Sea. Such material normally contains a high percentage of sulfur. It has been postulated by geologist Frederick Clapp that pressure from an earthquake could have caused the bitumen deposits to be forced out of the earth through a fault line. As it gushed out of the earth it could have been ignited by a spark or surface fire. It would then fall to earth as a burning, fiery mass.

The story of the Bible about Sodom and Gomorrah goes like this. These two cities were known for their immoral and sexually perverted behavior. The people living in them were indulging in lustful activities and actions that dishonored God. They were unconcerned about the poor, arrogant and overfed. God had been sending His angles to warn them about their sins but they did not heed to it. So one day, God rained sulphur and fire from the sky and the civilization was destroyed. Genises 19:1-29.

The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah became an example in the Bible of how God judges sin.

Excellent article. Now if we put this into perspective and take a hard look is the world today that Sodom and Gomorrah? Now observe, listen, look and you can see the signs all about. This world will end by fire, strikingly similar to them. Best wishes, Robert

Yes, Mr. Robert. Unfortunately the signs and symptoms are very obvious yet overlooked. We need more intersessors. with regards, Swapna

Hi Swapna, excellent as usual. Bringing archeological facts and findings into this story is great, but unfortunately there will always be the skept. Yet we praise God, because there will also be those who just needed one more piece of evidence to bring them to faith.

Thank you for your faithfulness. Teresa

Yes Teresa, it is indeed true that satan has so hardened the hearts of soul that it makes it difficult to have simple faith any more. BUT I do beleive that when He opens the eyes, then no one can deny Him. Thank you for your encouraging comments always. Love, Swapna
